Prodigal Son by Karl Kohlhase: A Captivating Journey of Guitar-driven Soundscapes

I met Karl through Twitter, like most of my new online friends. It was his mesmerizing guitar playing in one of his videos that caught my attention. As I learned more about his latest album, "Prodigal Son," and his goal of creating a concept album, I knew I had to give it the attention it deserved. I grabbed my headphones, ready to immerse myself in the entire experience.

Right from the start, "Prodigal Son" sets the feeling for the entire album. The guitar tone hits you instantly, making your head bob along to the rhythm. The energy is infectious, and you're immediately transported to a realm where the music just rocks.

As we dive deeper into the album with "Crying Wind," we embark on a laid-back journey. Beautifully crafted guitars intertwine with powerful drums, while the lyrics gently tell their story. The self-production on the album is stellar, with guitar tones surrounding you exactly as they should. Emotional basslines and raw energy flow through the music, and even on the first listen, you can sense a growth and self-reflection within the melodies.

By the time we reach the third track, "Keep It Together," the guitars take center stage. The song feels intense, slow, jazzy, and even a touch country. It's fascinating to discover new music in 2023, where each artist's song carries a lifetime of experiences to reflect upon. The track's title perfectly encapsulates the message as we transition to "Living the Dream."

"Living the Dream" arrives with a bluesy tone, shedding light on the everyday struggles of ordinary people. It serves as both an anthem and a thank-you to everyone trying to keep it together amidst life's challenges. The wah-wah and groovy guitar jam in "Shoulda Stuck Around" draw you in, and the relatable lyrics conjure memories that resonate with personal experiences. It's a story where you can effortlessly play both the hero and the villain.

Even before reaching this point, it's evident that I already love the album, and I don't need to finish it to say that. The care put into each guitar riff, drum fill, and perfectly filled-out low end is palpable. Sometimes, you just know an album is destined for your rotation, and "Prodigal Son" is sure to be one of my favorite discoveries from Twitter.

As the album progresses, particularly with the sixth track, "Roll Back Those Flood Waters," you can feel the culmination of the stories. The slightly darker atmosphere, combined with cool guitar progressions and fitting vocals, creates a captivating sonic experience. "Ready for the Storm" surprises with fantastic organ work, hitting harder than expected.

"This Time Around the Sun" takes us on a trippy journey with its spacey vibes and resonating vocals. At 42 years old, the lyrics strike a chord, reminding us of the value of time and cherished relationships. "Sound of the Seventies" pays homage to a different era, a time when listening to albums in the manner I'm attempting with my own reviews was the norm.

"Wah, Wah, Wah" brings out the guitar sound that I absolutely adore, often referred to by my Dad as a walking and talking guitar. It's a jam that showcases Karl's musical prowess. And with "Moving On," I find myself favoring this particular track. The bass movement behind the vocals, combined with the captivating guitar jams, creates an unforgettable listening experience.

As a guitar player, I found the entire album to be highly engaging. I'm eagerly anticipating my second playthrough, as I know I'll be able to delve deeper into the guitar sounds and appreciate them on a whole new level. "Prodigal Son" is an album that I wholeheartedly recommend listening to as a complete work. However, even if you choose to pick out individual tracks, you'll undoubtedly find winners throughout.

It's worth mentioning the exceptional presence Will McBride's drumming combined with the bass grooves brought to this album . The movement in the low end is crucial in creating that head-bobbing groove, perfectly complementing the fat, bluesy guitar tones that dominate the album. Do yourself a favor and give "Prodigal Son" a listen. Allow yourself to be swept away by Karl's captivating guitar-driven soundscapes.

In conclusion, "Prodigal Son" by Karl Kohlhase is an album that captivates from start to finish. From the infectious energy of "Prodigal Son" to the introspective moments of "Moving On," Karl's guitar prowess shines through. With its well-crafted melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and impeccable production, this album is a true gem. As a listener, you'll find yourself drawn into the music, feeling every note and groove. So, grab your headphones, sit back, and let yourself be enveloped by the sonic journey that is "Prodigal Son." It's an experience you won't want to miss.
