Welcome to Only the Host. Have a Crispy Day

Journey Through The Ether with Time. Space. Repeat.

11 Oct, 2023 1

In true journalistic fashion, this album listen began with 100mg edible. Looking back, it should have been more. This was inspired by Hunter S. Thompson, so please understand I may go into character a bit. That’s probably the edibles.

"I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me." "In a closed society where everybody's guilty, the only crime is getting caught. In a world of thieves, the only final sin is stupidity." "Some may never live, but the crazy never die." - Hunter S. Thompson

In a realm consumed by piano and sound, the world of Time. Space. Repeat. unfurls like a fever dream from an electric night in Vegas, but with less neon and more cosmic resonance. The album starts with the unmistakable serenade of "Origin Story," reminiscent of a wild, trippy escapade of my youth, with the melody acting as s guide. Melancholic, familiar, yet alien - it's the start of the sonic trip we didn't know we needed.

Suddenly, the swirling dervishes of guitars clash and clang, like hazy memories from last night's party - all while the drums shout out their existence. This ain't your granddaddy's shoe gaze. It's TSR, and the snare feels like an explosive exclamation of existence!

"Light Cycles" feels like drifting through space, punctuated by deep resonances of BASS that pull you into the gravitational sphere of rock territory. Guitars weave in and out, like the musings of a madman scribbling on a wall. A nod to Rush perhaps, not in sound, but the sheer engagement it demands - it's an audial spectacle.

Electronica rises, the bass rumbles, and the guitars disrupt in "You Complete Me." I’m reminded of a desert trip where the mirages weren't mere illusions but things of tangible beauty, dancing just out of reach.

"Rise to the Surface" - the name itself an invitation. We ascend on waves of sound, vibrating, shifting, morphing. Then, just when you feel you've attained enlightenment, HORNS blast your consciousness into the next dimension.

"Starfall," a sonic canvas of introspection, feels like looking back at your past from the vastness of the cosmos. It's a haunting, ponderous exploration, leaving one to wonder if the whispered voices might be the ghosts of memories long forgotten.

Suddenly, with a start, bass erupts, intertwining with mesmerizing guitar riffs, leading to "FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME." The sheer grunge force is a sucker punch to the senses. It’s a wild, raucous ride through TSR's soundscape, leaving you gasping and begging for more.

"Parting Ways" is an intimate ode, raw and heartrending. The harmonies envelop like an old friend's embrace, comfort and sorrow intertwined.

Then we dive into "The End." With drums and bells signaling perhaps the last rites, it's a tumultuous ride, anger and beauty juxtaposed with masterful riffs and an onslaught of toms. It's a cathartic exorcism.

The penultimate track seems foreboding, a message from beyond. The emperor's grand entrance is heralded by anxiety-ridden tones. Yet, within its misery, there's a beauty only TSR can deliver.

"The Other Place" feels like an awakening, a re-entry into the physical plane. Hopeful, curious, heavy, and uncertain all at once, it builds and builds, leaving us on the edge - no finale, just an ellipsis, leading to further sonic adventures.
