Sometimes I want to listen to a 90’s radio epic. Not a whole lot of music that comes out today has ties to the 90’s even though many of us listeners do. It’s a paradox that when you turn 40, folks think you’re looking for 70’s music. Well for me, being born in the 70’s, the 90’s were where it was at. Music I first listened to while driving. Music I first listened to while making out. Music that I had on tape AND CD. And the concerts were decadent. Hell, I feel lucky to have grown up when I did. I had some good times.
All this to say, this song by the Deon Powter band brought it back, damn near all of it this week. The song is called, “The Wolves in the Hills.” It’s an expert array of gold standard performing and excellent engineering. There’s a familiarity to it like an old friend or a high school year book. This experience has even sent me spiraling down the path of seeking out songs akin to it, like Sheryl Crow's 'If It Makes You Happy' and Marcy Playground's 'Sex and Candy'. It fits like a glove in so much music that came out 20-30 yrs ago that it actually sounds fresh. That is thanks to the lovely sound. Whatever they did to record this, keep it up. It sounds great. I’m not comparing them to 90’s bands so much as I am categorizing in my mind where they belong.
They belong in your ears. They are Deon Powter; guitar and vocals, Charles Eddy; drums and vocals, Cory Olsen; bass and vocals, Ryan Krarup; keys and vocals. They are from the land of Brisbane. They play a variety of rock, pop, funk, and soul thanks to the songwriter, Deon Powter. You can find them at deonpowter.com.
I will say if this song had reached my ears when I was a kid drinking “RED DOG” beers with my brother, I would have listened to it over and over…… just like I am now..without the “RED DOG.”
